Is Your Hair Fall the Result of a Bad Lifestyle?
A few days ago, one of my friends asked me if I was worried about the grey hairs showing up at my age. I told him that at this point, I was just happy to have whatever hair was left on my head! But this made me realize that my high hair fall rate is probably because of the bad lifestyle habits I’d picked up.
Do you feel the same way? (Not about my hair, silly! About your hair fall, because why else would you be reading this article?) If yes, let’s look at some of these bad lifestyle habits that result in excessive hair fall.
1. Smoking
Apart from the numerous health problems associated with it, one of the reasons I’ve tried to quit smoking is the hair loss it’s causing. Smoking cigarettes introduces nicotine into the body, which inhibits smooth blood circulation in the scalp and damages the hair follicles. The end result? Those heartbreaking strands of hair you notice on your pillow, t-shirt, and towel. In addition, nicotine also promotes excessive oil secretion, causing hair follicles to lose their grip on the scalp.
2. Stress
Hormones produced from stress put the hair follicles in a resting mode where the hair stops growing and lies dormant. This dormant hair can then get uprooted from the scalp very easily, sometimes with mere brushing! Stress also causes the white blood cells to attack the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss within weeks. So what’s it going to be—stress or your hair?
3. Poor Diet
Vitamins and minerals are essential for your body and your hair. When your diet is deficient in nutrients such as zinc, iron, and copper, it can lead to dryness in the scalp, making your hair weak, brittle, and more susceptible to breakage. The next time you pass up on your veggies and other healthy stuff, think of your receding hairline. And start eating!
4. Wrong Hairstyles
I used to love my man-buns. But sadly, because of my weak hair, I don’t tie them back anymore. Rough combing and tight hairstyles can cause weak hairs to break more, resulting in an aggravated receding hairline. So no matter how cool you’re trying to look, tying your hair with a hairband doesn’t cut it (unless you secretly crave the balding look!).
5. Excessive Heat Styling
Excessive use of blow dryers on hair causes dryness of the scalp, making the hair more vulnerable, resulting in dry and brittle hair that’s more prone to breaking. Maybe now you’ll let your curly hair be and cut back on those blow-drying sessions?
Conclusion
Unavoidable factors such as heredity aside, your lifestyle is probably the most responsible for the majority of hair loss you’re experiencing. Common sense dictates that you do what I do—avoid these bad habits, so you can soon have the pleasure of running your hand through your hair and sport your favorite hairstyle once again!
